Melee Morale Test Wording Clarification - Core Rules v2.9

The Grimdark Future v2.9 rules state “Melee results: If the test is failed whilst the unit is down
to half or less of its total size or tough value, then it Routs (remove from play), else it is Pinned.”

It seems there are two if conditions here, which are confusing the wording: 1) whether the test is failed and 2) whether the unit is down to half or less of its wounds.

Am I understanding correctly that:

  • if the Morale test (post-Melee) is failed while over half of the wounds are left, then the unit is just Pinned?
  • if the Morale test (post-Melee) is failed while half or less of the wounds are left, then the unit is Routed?

The big question: if the Morale test (post-Melee) is passed while half or less of the wounds are left, is the unit Pinned or fine?

The “else it is Pinned” in the rules seems read as “If the test is failed whilst the unit is down
to half or less of its total size or tough value, then it Routs (remove from play), else [if the test is passed whilst the unit is down to half or less of its total size or tough value] it is Pinned.”

But I could also see that being read as “If the test is failed whilst the unit is down
to half or less of its total size or tough value, then it Routs (remove from play), else [if the test is failed whilst the unit is above half of its total size or tough value] it is Pinned.”

If the morale test is passed the unit is fine, regardless of casualties.

So basically if you have over 50% and fail, then you are Pinned, if you have 50% or less and fail, then you are Routed.

Thank you!

@IronMike, this clarifies that we did play it correctly.
