Battelore and Memoir 44 are board games I am quite fond of, and I was in the process of making a 40k version as my group does not enjoy not grid-based movement in games.
Instead, I'm simply creating a grid system for Firefight.
The board will be made of hexes, with each hex big enough to fit a 40mm base easily inside.
So far, the alterations to rules to accommodate are: - Each hex represents 3" - 1 model per hex - Close combat can occur to adjacent hexes.
This may slightly change balancing, but has anyone attempted anything like this?
A side note is that I print custom boards at a local printing place, and have done so for other custom board games so the final product is not an issue, I'm more interested in the discussion of hex based movement applied to the Firefight system.

I have used hexes for Age of Fantasy. I used 4" hexes, and had to tweak a bit. It worked well.
For me, miniatures games are an organized way of playing with toy soldiers. I find moving between hexes more fun than measuring.
It might lose something for the skirmish games, though.
