Hi everyone! First post on the forum (I also hope that this is the right board for this thread). I’ve recently started playing grimdark future with a couple of friends after some years out of the hobby and, now that I’m getting back into it, I’ve realized that I don’t have enough scenery for my games and that the lack of a mat is a very big issue to me. I was wondering if someone can suggest where to get a mat and/or some scenery for a good price. I don’t want to spend much money right now because I don’t play frequently, so expensive stuff is not a good investment. Thanks in advance for any reply!

Are you looking for gray, green, whatever?
I got a green EcoRug from Lowes for $20. (Looks like they are $22 now.) I sprayed it with a yellowy-green can, and it looks great. It is 6'x8', so you can make two 6'x4' mats out of one. I cut mine to almost the full size of my ping-pong table.
If you want more urban, or cheaper, you could get a gray-ish sheet from a thrift store and get it dirty.

I was thinking about something desert themed, but in the end anything can work.

In between in cost, brown vinyl fabric can look great for desert.

I just got done doing this ->
I have it cut 22" x 30" as that is what we have been playing firefight on. You could do something like this up larger for grimdark.
Just some cardboard (I cut down a 98 cent display board), then 3 layers of paint, base, then two lighter coats put on with a sponge at reducing pressure/coverage.
I did black, dark grey, light grey. if you wanted something more 'green', brown, dark green, medium/light green would probably work well (might need to put more effort into the 'dry brushed' layers to get them to look better for that usage).
