Are you using Harpoon? Does it makes sense in the army you have?
Do you have models that look the part? Have you converted? Or do you remember it as an upgrade without modeling it?
Do you think it is necessary for balance?
It seems a bit arbitrary and quick-fix to me.
It says "upgrade". So that means that model still gets its sword or whatever? Harpoons are easily picked up, I guess?
I know I was a bit frustrated fighting a Giant Troll the other day, and it had D2+ and Regeneration. On the other hand, I'd hate to see a 10 point upgrade take out something expensive, especially since you can't kill the model with the harpoon until you've gotten rid of the rest of the unit. (Answer: a monster with Sniper!) But if some of my spells had gone off more often, or if I'd gotten my spiders with Rending (fits effect of poison better than other rules) against it, I'd have been more of a thread to the troll. I have seen goblins whittle down an Ent.
So I haven't tried Harpoon yet, and the jury is out about whether I feel it is necessary and appropriately balanced.
I do think I need a bigger giant. I have some trolls that I already use Mountain Troll, and this one is bigger. But he isn't big enough for those stats. I may have to invent a slightly bigger troll for that model (and maybe get him two friends), and then get a bigger model for the giant!
Personally I now always try to take a couple of harpoons in my army to try and deal a couple extra wounds to monsters, although hitting on 4+/5+ and wounding on 4+ doesn't generally cause too many wounds. So I see them as a nice bonus that can cause a couple of wounds, but they're not my primary anti-monster weapon.
Do you use miniatures, or are you exclusively digital? If the former (or if you can customize digitally), do you have miniatures with a harpoon? I assume anything that looks appropriately deadly would be fine.
And I'm curious about broader use, as well, though I think most people are playing GF.
I personally have not yet used it, but I will certainly consider it when I build my elves list soon (I have a friend, who plays GF, who is interested in trying AoF). That said...likely will not model it on the figure. We do a lot of Counts-as play in GF today, so that would easily transfer over.
I like my tea, as I like my nights: dark, endless, and impossible through which to sleep.
It certainly seems to me to be able to be a unit enhancement that isn't explicitly modeled. As long as both sides remember.
And of course if you do model, it could be a really big axe or something other than an actual harpoon. To get to units of 10, I cut spears off two of my dead guys. I put a sword from the Morgul Knights on one, and am pleased with him. I glued the head of an axe from some Heroquest orc or goblin on the spear of another. It is a bit too large, but he's holding the handle with two hands (as he was his spear). And now I wish I'd gone a bit bigger, to make it more obvious, and called that the Harpoon.
@onepageanon, still wondering whether the figure with Harpoon gains the new attack in addition to previous attacks. The upgrade implies so, but it seems odd.
