Hey there everyone! I recently came across these rules and learned to really love them in my first few games now. Thanks for your work, thanks for this great alternative. My new prefered rulesset for my collection of "grim darkish models from some big company". ;-)
So, in my first few games, everythin felt really good and had the right flavor. Well... almost. One thing leaves me kind of unsure and doesn't really fit. I wanted to know, if someone else is also feeling like this.
It's about the difference between Assault Rifle vs Auto Rifle vs Storm Rifles and especially how "weak" the standard Assault Rifle feels.
It is also in the liste, where it doesn't make sense pointwise:
In the Battle Brothers detachements, Option B for Watch Brothers offers either a Aussault Rifle or a Storm Rifle... both for 5 points... but the Storm Rifle is one attack more... So this doesn't make sense at least for the points.
In my opinion a Storm Rifle needs "a little something more". That one single shot without any other benefits, just feels wrong compared with a Bolter in a wellknown other game.
I think a great and rather easy way, would be to give Assault Rifle the "Relentless" rule. This would add just a little more potential chance of additional firepower. Or of course: keep as the original with 12" A2 and 24" A1
But I think the relentless rule for the weapon would be somehow more elegant.
In our group of players we have removed the auto rifle for the squads (we keep them for the heroes) and replaced by storm rifles because they give extremely lethal units and take away the interest of others who only have assault rifle.
I took a look at the Watch Brothers list (v2.13) and I noticed that while both the Assault Rifle [24", A1] and the Storm Rifle [24", A2] are priced at +5 points each, making the Storm Rifle the *clear* superior option due to the extra attack, the Assault Rifle is able to take a number of Attachments that you can't put on the Storm Rifle.
Any model may take one Assault Rifle attachment: -Gravity Rifle [18", A2, Rending] +10pts -Plasma Rifle [24", A1, AP2] +15pts -Flamethrower [12", A6] +15pts -Fusion Rifle [12", A1, AP4, Deadly 6] +25pts
So at the end of the day while the base Assault Rifle is inferior to the Storm Rifle and costs the same, with a bit of extra points you make something much more powerful.
Yes it allows you to fire both at once, very handy.
I mean, you could always use the Points Calculator (from the Patreon) to stat up some Relentless Assault Rifles, personally I'm fine with a baseline "vanilla" option on the list for when I need it, especially with the modular Attachments.
I've been playing battle brothers using heavy rifles instead of assault rifles (24'', A1, AP(1) ) which are used by stormtroopers in imperial defense forces army list. I'm also giving storm rifles (24'', A2, AP(1)) to help give them more punch compared to the other multi attack weapons. I think it helps a lot, but you have to go through and points out the difference (about +10 per 5 models). I thought about doing relentless, or doubling the number of shots for battle brothers assault rifles (calling them battle rifles?) and doubling storm rifles as well but it messes with other aspects of balance (minigun/gravity gun for example).
Adding AP(1) to assault rifles and storm rifles (calling them heavy rifles or battle rifles) is the best solution because: 1) it doesn't increase the maximum damage, just the average damage. 2) it doesn't add to rolling overhead (as rending or relentless would do) 3) it doesn't overlap too much with other power weapons (except maybe plasma?) 4) makes battle brothers feel punchier compared to other 1 attack assault rifle models 5) helps battle brothers compete with prime brothers
