So my son (10) and I have played a couple of games, just Orks vs Orks so far.
And we've noticed a few units/upgrades are really useful, and others basically pointless.
For Example: Ork Boys with Carbines just decimate other infantry units (20 shots), even tho they only hit on 5s Vehicles (Trucks/ Tanks/ Walkers) seem almost impossible to kill with their 2+ save Things like Goblin Artillery with only 1 attack are pointless because most games they dont hit anything. Ork Warbikers with Twin Mini MG's die in 1 shot, but if they survive they get 3x6 shooting attacks and like the Orks with Carbines just decimate.
Is this sort of Normal stuff with all armies were certain units/upgrades are just amazing and others are terrible?
And is the solution to Orks with Carbines just maneuvering around then using terrain to your advantage? we've been keeping it pretty simple so far so its easier for my son, but I wonder if that unit in particular is better than it should be because we have fairly open battle fields?
That's really interesting, because a lot of people have been complaining that the orcs are too powerful!
Some of it seems like luck of the dice, whereas other things are probably tactics and terrain setup. Orcs vs orcs is definitely a very swingy matchup, because you generally rely on units that hit on 5+ in shooting and 3+/4+ in melee. Make sure to up AP(4) and Deadly(3/6) weapons against Vehicles!
I think the thing we noticed most was that anything with a single shot weapon was basically useless
I had 2x Goblin Walkers with the base Plasma Rifle in one game, they shot every turn, and I think did a single wound for for the whole game, they also only took like 1 wound themselves, in Close Combat they also did nothing useful.
I also had some units of Orc Bikers with Twin Mini MGs, assuming they stay alive, they roll 18 dice each turn.
I guess I just don't understand why you would take the goblin walker and have it do nothing for 105pts... when you can have the war bikers for 110pts and potentially take out entire units with long range shooting or take wounds off vehicles due to so many hits
Probably the biggest issue is it didn't feel like it was even worth shooting at vehicles during the games, cause you never seemed to actually hit them. or hurt them.

Dice saturation is a major thing in this game too I find, I'd rather take a shred rifle than a plasma gun most of the time. As for tanks, Ive found you need dedicated AT weapons to really damage them, stuff like grenade launchers, plasma guns or auto cannons wont hurt vehicles like they would in 40k.
