My FLGS will not be opening even after Covid restrictions are eased and I'm in need of a game I can hopefully play with local 40K players because I'll be damned if I can keep up with GW's release schedule, flood of special rules and weapons that make entire categories of troop obsolete.
An additional problem was what army to use since my attempt at painting some Horus Heresy marines stalled at the "I don't really care to paint this many rivets. Seriouslyn" stage. The lazy way out would be to attempt to combine one of my Bolt Action armies with some 40K tanks to make an Imperial Guard or Human Defence Force. But as I contemplated exactly what to do I had what I consider a better plan. I think that the open nature of the Grimdark Future rules let me think slightly out of the box.
Rozalski is the artist that inspired the boardgame Scythe and the RTS Iron Harvest and he does landscapes that combine traditional agriculture and large mechs. Like so

I happen to have a painted army for the Ethiopian Italian War of 1935 and I'm thinking to exploit the feudal nature of the Ethiopian countryside in order to do something inspired by Rozalski with an African twist. After a probably too large order of Dust and Konflikt 47 walkers I've put together a few scenes to keep up the inspiration and my hobby mojo on this project.

The Imperial Cavalry charges past a stelae field as goats scatter and a walking tank lays down suppressing fire.

Local militia interrupts harvest to point power armor towards the enemy's position.

Airborne Imperial guard deploy into false banana plantation to support the local defense. Perplexed donkeys look on.

Regular Ethiopian soldiers practice close cooperation with walking tank.
Anyhow, the above need a bit more paint and I have more walkers to work on and should probably paint more civilians and livestock.
