I have some questions about large scale Epic gaming.
In honestly I don't know exactly how the original epic rule sets worked for 6mm 40k but I feel simply halving movement and firing range isn't a full solution for playing larger scale battles with the OPR ruleset. It says in the small scale rules that the number models on the stand dictate the tough value but if you have 20 infantry units fielded per side that is a very large amount of wound counters on the board. Did full squads die in single hits in the original rules or did they also have multiple wounds?
I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has created some adaptations to better suit epic scale games, perhaps less shots per unit or a lowered tough value? Or wether or not this is something that is in the works?
Came into some old epic armies of very large proportions from a friend recently and much prefer playing OPR to GW 40k.

I have played GF with individually mounted Epic figures, and hope to do so again. It is just fun sitting down to a really small game. andyshobby.wordpress.com/2021/01/08/battle-for-heck-station/I could imagine doing this with multiple figures on a base, but not for a full Epic-scale game. Just a faster largish 40K scale game. For smaller games, I'd use the individual figures mentioned above. For big epic games, you really want to have the game at that level. Individual figures of infantry shouldn't count, but you replace them with whole units. I think this would need to be a different game. You might be able to pretend the stats for a single figure would apply to the stand of figures, but I don't think this would work for tanks. But for that scale, I'd just use Epic 40K. It is simple, elegant, and tons of fun. I think it handles mixed units better than directly using GF would. I could imagine a OPR treatment, but if it did it by requiring mostly homogeneous units, I'm not sure I'd want to do it that way. I've been doing other things lately, but hope to cycle back to Epic 40K (and of course back to some more OPR--gotta get moving painting more dwarves!). andy

Hey Andy,
Really appreciate this reply. Almost all the models I came across are glued into their bases already and multi-based so I was looking for a simple system to use them. Having said that, I never actually put in the time to read the epic rules so I will take your advice and check them out.
I'd really like to dissect a few of these units I've gotten hold of and get some tiny individual forces and run some mini 40k like you have as well.
Thanks!

Depends on which rules you have. Epic Armageddon is not as simple. Epic 40,000 is simple and elegant. But not one-page simple.
The old epic figures came individually and you glued them on bases. I didn't have to clip them up.
Again, the main difference is whether you want to: 1) do skirmish (GFF or smaller GF) in a really small space (individual figures) 2) use multi-base epic figures for Grimdark Future (marking casualties isn't expensive because you won't have tons of them--a squad may be two bases, a typical battle might need 8 bases or so?) 3) play really epic battles, which I don't think GF is up to handle.
Well, as I think about it, I suppose you represent multi-stand bases of infantry as if they were a single figure, and most vehicles would be treated as infantry rather than GF vehicles, maybe with Fast, without Tough, typically better armor, and longer ranges. You would save Tough and other aspects of vehicles for titans. But you'd have to come up with the force lists.

Just coming to this, but One Page Epic Grimdark would be awesome, and shouldn't need too many mechanical changes to the general basic rules. Has anybody written these down? I don't see anything in the "User Created Content" folder..

I've been toying with adapting this for a modern ruleset, which would work for Sci Fi as well.
Some thoughts I had:
1. I think halving movement is necessary, halving shooting less so, but works depending on the ground scale feel you want.
2. I think suppression becomes a must have.
3. Units are organized into stands, each stand is a fire team or individual vehicle. Each unit is of squad size (or vehicle equivalent). Stands must maintain coherency.
4. I think both the points and wounds need to be rescaled so the game doesn't drag. I think the existing calculator will work and the values will be a solved problem once we cut down weapon ranges and tough values.
5. Infantry in cover is particularly sticky and we need to make sure this is modeled somehow.
6. I want offboard artillery.

I used to play 6mm space marine/titan legions and it was a fun game. me and friends would play 6-8k points worth. You could base units on the company cards that were used for choosing your army. OPR for 6mm sounds good as have sooo many regiments and companies. I think i can field over 40k worth of troops.
wounds didn't happen, you did have damage to titans and shields to get through. tanks got hit and died same with super heavy tanks and infantry.
have just been introduced to OPR and enjoying it lots

Just started to look at OPR and loving what am seeing so far. Again, as Greedo said I couldn’t see an ideas section on the boards but would be very interested in seeing where this went… I bought some of vanguard minis 3mm “honestly they’re not spacemarines” a yr or 2 ago and done nothing with them - I didn’t see much in the way of a rule set by/linked to the manufacturer so if OPR could get there first that would be amazing

My friend suggested, that we could find some sort of fast paced down scaled version of WH. A pocket edition to play over break times or on trips. i don’t think that the OG epic would fir perfectly for that, as it could be bit long and complex. (At least Armageddon is as far as i know) so i was looking at downscaling OPR GF and modifying it for such change to see what happens.
I’ll probably share my experiences once i get any.

The lack of fully developed Epic scale rules is the obvious gap in the suite of rules. Those notes at the end of GF don't really do the job.
I am 3d printing 6mm armies and think the OPR system could work for proper massed battles.

I considered doing this. It would be great but the only problem would be vehicles - how would you implement them without completely messing up the internal balance?

I am 3d printing 6mm armies and think the OPR system could work for proper massed battles. The only problem with using GF for 6mm games using stands is the need for lots of small wound markers. Plus with a larger scale battle the variation of weapons, troops and vehicles would become overwhelming to keep track of. I feel there would need to be more abstracted and stats, less weapon and troop variation... Like light, medium and heavy infantry and they have two attack profiles to choose from. Anti personnel or anti vehicle. Not sure how that would be implemented though.

ariktaranis - 100% agree. With renewed interest in Epic Armageddon and even Warmaster Revolution, there are opportunities here for Gaetano to expand the OPR appeal.

Yeah, I think he'd be on to a winner. If you'd like to play a super simple game of "not Warmaster" I'd suggest taking a look at 'One Hour Wargames' by Niel Thomas. It's pretty good and easy to house rule. It's VERY abstracted but that's what draws me to it - especially after I read his explanation for why/how he abstracts it so. I'm pretty sure you can find a free PDF of it on Google.

There was a version called pocket Epic where there was a set of rules out there specifically for this. where they used several bases for a quick little game. it is here sites.google.com/site/pocketw40k/home
