I am putting together my first Imperial Guard force for Firefight, and I wanted to post what I've got. I've got a question, but I also wanted to see if you guys can offer me any suggestions in general on it.
Here's what I've got:
1 Commander
2 Infantry Squads (1 with a radio, and both with a grenade launcher)
1 Weapons Team
1 Veteran (w/ radio and sniper rifle)
1 Stormtrooper (w/ fusion gun or radio+hvy volley gun)
The basic idea I'm going for is to be able to operate in 2 to 3 basic elements, with at least one part of each element having a radio so as to ensure it can take advantage of commander orders should it find itself at the critical point in an engagement. I was aiming for a flexible force.
The weapons team and the veteran are the longer-range sort of overwatch element. I went with the veteran over the sniper so I could slap the radio on him.
The infantry squads can operate together as a single element, or be two separate ones. If I go as two separate, I can operate the stormtrooper w/ radio and volleygun with one, and the commander with the other. I went with grenade launchers for the squads because the different ammo available looks to offer flexibility in what the squad can handle.
The stormtrooper is there to be used as described above, or if I have the initiative for the round- be used as an ambush element to go after a high-priority target via the fusion gun. I envision deploying the ambush and activating the stormtrooper first before the opponent goes, so in that case (and due to the points cost of the fusion gun) he doesn't have a radio, because he wouldn't be getting the commander bonus.
So that said so far, do you guys have any thoughts, advice, or suggestions to offer on this build?
And now my first question- I'm not completely sold on my stormtrooper, and I wonder if I would get better value by just adding an additional infantry squad or something else. I like the thematic and theoretical value of having that ambush capability if I need it; but I don't know if the practical value would be outweighed by just having another squad available in its place. Thoughts?
I've been fiddling with some other variants too- Maybe one of these would be more effective:
1 Commander + 2 infantry squads
1 Veteran (+radio +sni) + 2 snipers
1 Stormtrooper
1 Commander + 1 infantry squad
1 Veteran (+radio +sni) + 2 snipers
2 Stormtroopers
1 StTroop Commander + 2 StTroopers
1 Veteran (+radio +sni) + 3 snipers
1 StTroop Commander + 2 StTroopers
3 Veterans (pla + stealth cloak)
1 Sniper
