Hi all, i haven’t played 40k in a decade, but I hauled out the old space marines and orks to try 1000 point GD rules with my 11 year old.
He ran the BB (master with jump pack attached to assault squad, two brothers squads with HMG and an assault walker with minigun) and I ran the orcs (two leaders with claw each leading a ten man melee unit, a unit of 5 bosses, and three rocket buggies)
I like the system - he had some gripes. The brothers didn’t seem as tough as they should be (easy fix, I’ll use the prime list next time). I kind of get where he was coming from with this - the master and squad charged a melee squad and killed seven - but next round the leader and survivors charged back in, it ended up only being the master left - the swing back was brutal.
Highlights were the boss squad charging the walker and putting three damage on it and getting absolutely pulverised in return. Knew that would happen but he’s 11, some drama going his way was important
One weirdness - I had combined two buggies and turn 2 they rammed a brothers unit and killed 4 of them. 12 impact hits is a lot of hits to be saving on 3+. Frankly significantly more effective than shooting would have been (heavy flamers excepted)
I had deliberately built the lists so that the bb had an advantage (lots of anti infantry weapons) as long as they kept the orcs away, which he did a reasonable job of. The orc list is pretty strong.
Anyway was fun, I’ll pull out some other stuff and give him some fast vehicles next time so he can run orcs over too.
