I am a little confused by the rules for area strike with melee. Normal melee says you can only strike within 2” of the target unit, so your first model in base to base with an enemy plus 1 model behind them is who is striking. So, logically, their arm plus weapon reach is 2”. Makes sense. Now with area striking, I can strike within 3” of the model within striking range? So I can be 2” away from base to base (striking distance), reach through the half inch/inch wide model, and reach another 3” behind him? So now my melee attacks with a sword can reach 5-6”? If I’m striking a large monster with the huge bases, can my sword now reach 10” (striking range plus his base width plus 3” behind)? Area striking seems a bit finicky when it comes to melee.
With ranged attacks, if the model is at 24” from my 24” ranged weapon, can I also area attack units behind my target, theoretically making my weapon range 27”(24” +3”)?

Yes, that's correct. The rules for area shooting/striking are there to help balance out horde vs elite armies, as without them a horde army can become literally impossible to kill in certain situations. If you want a narrative explanation, think of it as adjacent models being drawn into melee combat, or spraying an area with bullets.
