I use mostly GW LotR figures. Usually I can combine some units from similar lists to cover my figures, like high elf / wood elf, and orcs/goblins. (Though I did eventually have to design my own orc stats, because they are bigger than goblins but not the big green things.)
I made my undead from the Army of the Dead figures, plus some ringwraiths. I ended up designing my own units, but I admit that's a pain in the butt.
They do OK with vampire undead rules for most things: some skeleton warriors, some skeletons with spears. There are three different choices for my Morgul Knights.
I have a bunch of ringwraights. Several on foot, one on horse, one on flying critter (GW calls them "fell beasts" as if that was the name, but that just means "dangerous animals").
I had been thinking of using Vampire Master for the flying ringwraith, though I wanted his mount to be halfway between Winged Terror and Zombie Dragon. I was thinking of using Champion for the other ringwraiths, and they can be mounted on Abyssal Beast. So maybe I'll use that.
I wanted my ringwraiths on foot to be leaders in skeletal units, or be able to be grouped into an elite unit. The latter is purely because I have 6 of them, so I want to actually use them. I was thinking of using the rule (not sure if it still exists) that let a unit cast one spell (not a spell per figure). But now I'm trying to find "standard" rules for them.
I'm thinking of using Champion for them as leaders. I had not planned to use them as ethereal. They could be wizards, but Frightful Gaze seems really appropriate.
As a unit, I don't see anything in this list that is a good fit but sn't ethereal. If the general feel that lots of leaders (in units) and even lots of wizards is balanced enough, I will just make them all Champions and have lots of leaders. But if that feels too many, I'd like a suggestion for a unit of 3 that would not be too far from Champion (that they are similar whether grouped together or leading other units). (I'd actually like a leader with most units. I have a lot of elf characters, and would like to see them distributed with different units.)
One reason I haven't been thinking of them as Ethereal is that I have 6 Nighthaunt figures. They could be Wraiths (though they don't have Great Weapons) or even banshees. Maybe I should pull a unit from the ghostly undead.
Beyond that, I have lots of spiders. Most of them are about man-sized, but I have 2 or 3 that are bigger. I need good rules for them. I won't use Poison (the Poison rule just doesn't make sense to me for poison). Strider probably. Any suggestions for a good unit for these? Again, trying to use standard units, and if I could choose them from a small list of armies, that would be best. I am comfortable with the point calculator, but it is more work keeping lists of these units.
What would be cool is a search function. I'd specify number of figures, some stats and abilities, and get lists of matching units from different armies!
Trying to "standardize" my orcs (who really are part of the same army as my goblins) might be next project,
