Advance says a unit can move forward normal move distance 'and' sideways 'and' backwards at half speed. Does this mean a unit that has a 6" move can move 6" forward and 3" sideways? Or, for example 3" forward, pivot, then move 1.5" backwards? Or should this rule say move forward 'or' move sideways 'or' backwards.

You can mix and match how you want to move, but moving in other directions than forward counts as double the movement distance.
