I was about to use an old 40k Vindicator in Grimdark for demo and noticed you have to take sponsons in the Battle brothers Beta list. I know perfectly well Grimdark should not be seen as a 40k-light-system but still it would have been nice to use a model straight off with the Beta. Same with a whirlwind.
All this would be fixed if the sponson Twin Heavy Machineguns weren't mandatory but a upgrade.

The Battle Tanks need the sponsons to get the damage needed for their Tough.
On the other side, you simply don't need to be WYSIWYG, if the model doesn't have sponson it is still fine.
But you are also free to take the point calculator document and make the calculations to move those weapons to the Attack APC.

Yeah I know all that. But thanks. But honestly to note the game as a fun and balanced game and then ask them to make their own units with a calculator who has its flaw means the point of having a free game gets lost.
And honestly a noob usually doesn't want to have heavy bolters on the sides of a vindicator.
I am one. Basically I have several friends who prefer to play 40k if they can't use some common sense on wysiwyg from the basic list.
Same problem with battle tank at human defender force.

That is simply the OPR philosophy: If you can't find a fitting statline in the provided army books, make your own statline with the provided tools and guidelines.

I know. But at the same time: sponson heavy bolter being optional- problem solved for loads of miniatures out there.

Egge, I know exactly where you are coming from. I was graciously engaged in a conversation with OPR himself about this very subject. I made all the same arguments you have. It was explained to me that for balance reasons and to make certain vehicle options a more viable choice for the points cost it was determined that for the player to get the most bang for their buck the sponson weapons would be mandatory. I know, it seems counter intuitive to me too. However, as previously stated with access to the point calculator you can make profiles for your tanks that don't include the sponson weapons. I personally recommend getting the calculator anyway. If you really find Grimdark enjoyable, you will have even more fun with it when you and your friends can create rules for any unit you want to play with. It frees you up to excercise your imagination when building models too. Make yourself a really cool hero to lead your army and create some bespoke rules for him, etc.
