The battle is underway, and I've updated the pictures in the link above. My wife is playing the elves, and my son (Alan, who has not enjoyed miniatures games yet) is playing the goblins. He seems to be having fun, but not as much as if he were playing a video game. So maybe he won't be as reluctant in the future.
The elves are trying to stop the goblins from getting into their forest. The goblins need to get 5 units off the elves' back edges on their side of the river.
The 4" hexes are pretty good, but some adjustments need to be made for later games. I'll post the rules we are using, and mention changes I think we should make. For example, I may need to make a limit for how many figures can go in a hex, because my son piles them up pretty high. My current rules say the charge has to go into the target unit's hex, but this has been much too crowded. I think I'll say you have to have enough movement to get into their hex, but can attack from adjacent. And currently I have most units doing a Rush or Charge at 3 4" hexes, and Fast is moving 4 hexes. I wonder if the latter should be 5, but that seems too fast.
So far, the simple speed of using hexes fits the simple rules well, but I need some fine-tuning.
Also, how do you feel about Orc boar riders getting both Furious and Impact? They two are similar, and it just feels strange. I was using those rules for the giant wolves, and they pretty much wiped out a unit of elves, with wolf riders cleaning them up later (with impact).
